What is THE BUDDY WALK?
The Buddy Walk was developed by the National Down Syndrome Society in 1995 to promote acceptance and awareness of people with Down syndrome. The Buddy walk has grown from 17 walks in 1995 to more than 250 walks planned for 2006. Whether you have Down syndrome, know someone who does or just want to show your support, come and join the Buddy Walk. ANYONE can be a buddy!
2005 was the first Buddy Walk for Montgomery County and what a HUGE success it was! Over $15,000 was raised which has enabled the name change from PODS (Parents of Down Syndrome) to DSNMC (Down Syndrome Network of Montgomery County). This has made the transition for the group to now support all of those whose lives have been touched by Down syndrome rather than just the parents.
As with anything new, additional funds are required to follow through with the new programs and ventures that go along with a new name. It is with events like the Buddy Walk that help the DSNMC put those programs and plans into effect. So please take the Buddy Walk Challenge to raise money to help build an organization that will be able to support children, teens and adults with Down syndrome as well as the friends and families of those with Down syndrome. Individuals who raise $1,000 or more will become members of the Buddy Walk Hall of Fame.
All monies raised support DSNMC, The ARC of Montgomery County and NDSS.
